The twelve months (original title: Dvanáct měsíčků ) is a Czech fairy tale film by Karel Janák from 2012 . The film is based on a literary source by Božena Němcová .

action

Since the death of her father, the lovely and amiable Marie has lived with her ruthless stepmother and her mean daughter Flora, who is always preferred, in a snowy mountain village. Marie has to do all the chores around the house, give her only Christmas present to her stepsister and is insulted and harassed while the rest of the family is having fun. Finally, on New Year's Eve, Karl, who has become rich in the meantime, returns from a stay abroad. Because of his wealth, all the women in town are interested in him, including Flora. Marie likes him too, but she is not allowed to meet him because her stepmother forbids her. They all seem to have their eyes on Karl. This clearly overwhelmed the bachelor and, on the advice of his brother, he gave the girls three apparently unsolvable tasks. Whoever solves it can marry him. So the stepmother sends Marie to solve the tasks (violets, fresh strawberries and a blossoming apple tree in the village - and all of this, even though it is winter). In the mountains she meets the twelve months that help her solve the tasks. Flora then only gives Karl the message that the task has been solved. During the third task, when the months follow Marie into the village, Karl finds out that it is not Flora who does the task, but her sister. Marie, however, thinks that Karl will marry Flora and flees to the mountains, where she is taken in by the twelve months. However, Karl follows her, as does the stepmother and Flora. With the help of the months, the latter get into a thunderstorm . The stepmother is struck by lightning and when Flora touches her, she is also electrified. Black as if burned, with torn clothes and charged with electricity for the rest of their lives, they return to the village, where people avoid them. In the end, Karl and Marie get married.

background

The idea for the film came up in the 1990s. Originally, Margaret Hrubešová was to be cast as Marie and Gabriela Wilhelm as stepmother. However, the film was repeatedly postponed. After revising the script, the film was finally shot in 2010 and 2011 and released in 2012. The location was the Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm .

In the film, the twelve months are portrayed as twelve old men who have a magic wand with which they can influence the weather in their favor.

reception

When it was first broadcast on Christmas Eve 2012, 2.36 million viewers saw the film on Czech television .

The fairy tale was broadcast on ZDF for the first time on Christmas Eve 2016 .
