Dieter Seitzer (born April 17, 1933 in Tübingen ) is a German electrical engineer who researched the data reduction of digitized signals and their microelectronic implementation for applications in the audio and video sector.

Life

Dieter Seitzer studied and graduated in 1952 at the Technical University of Stuttgart in the subject Electrical Engineering and was from 1962 in the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon in Switzerland operates. In 1970 he accepted the call to professor at the new chair for "Technical Electronics" at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen.

Services

As a professor, Dieter Seitzer set the first research priorities in data reproduction for image and sound signals and the implementation of the necessary components and circuits . From 1977 to 1979 he was dean of the technical faculty. In 1981, Seitzer initiated the establishment of the contact point for research and technology transfer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as the representative for technology transfer at the Technical Faculty. In 1984 the new center for microelectronics and information technology was founded, which later became the Institute for Integrated Circuits , which he set up and directed - today the largest institute within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft . From 1999 to 2005 he was the first honorary president of the Bavarian Research Foundation . A crucial research element was the consideration of the physiological properties of the sensory channels . Seitzer is considered a pioneer of the MP3 audio coding process . He is the emeritus holder of the chair for technical electronics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and founding director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) .

Seitzer has been married to his wife Ilse since 1959 and has three daughters and seven grandchildren.
