The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, also known as Fraunhofer IIS for short , is a facility of the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research eV The institute is based in Erlangen , its activities are applied research and development in the field of computer science to be assigned to information processing and telecommunications . Fraunhofer IIS is the largest institute in the Fraunhofer Society. Other locations of the institute are in Nuremberg , Fürth , Dresden , Bamberg , Waischenfeld , Coburg , Würzburg , Ilmenau , Deggendorf and Passau .

history

Fraunhofer IIS has existed under its current name since 1990. The institute was formed under the leadership of Dieter Seitzer, who also became the first institute director, from the Fraunhofer working group for integrated circuits , which in turn was formed in 1985 from the Center for Microelectronics and Information Technology GmbH was created in Erlangen. In 2003, the two institute divisions applied electronics (IIS-A) and component technology (IIS-B) became two independent institutes: Fraunhofer IIS and Fraunhofer IISB. In 1992 the facility for the automation of circuit and system design (EAS) in Dresden was integrated into Fraunhofer IIS as a branch of the institute. The next expansion of Fraunhofer IIS took place in 1995 with the establishment of the Fraunhofer Application Center for Transport Logistics and Communication Technology (AVK) in Nuremberg.

In 1998 the Development Center X-ray Technology (EZRT) was founded. This is a joint department of Fraunhofer IIS, Erlangen and the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing IZFP, Saarbrücken & Dresden. The development center has been in Fürth since 2000. In 2013 the new Fraunhofer EZRT location was opened in Fürth-Atzenhof.

In 1987 the scientists from a group around Karlheinz Brandenburg achieved a breakthrough in the compression of audio signals and were able to present the first real-time precursor of MP3 ; the hardware for this was developed in cooperation with the Freiburg company Intermetall .

In 2000, a Fraunhofer Working Group for Electronic Media Technology (AEMT) was founded as a branch of Fraunhofer IIS in Ilmenau , from which the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) emerged in 2004 .

In 2011 Fraunhofer IIS was one of the founding partners of the Energie Campus Nürnberg .

Research and Development

The scientists conduct research in the field of microelectronics , information processing, telecommunications, audio and multimedia technology , digital broadcasting , high-frequency technology , localization and navigation, satellite navigation , logistics and automation in mechanical and plant engineering. Another important topic is camera technology for digital cinema . Image acquisition and recognition are keys to quality control in manufacturing, production automation and medical technology . Intelligent image sensors , high-speed cameras , and ultra - fine focus X-ray systems are also being developed for this purpose .

At the EAS development of adaptive systems in Dresden, the scientists work specifically on the efficient implementation of intelligent systems. In addition to functional safety and reliability in system and chip design , new approaches in system integration , the analysis of large amounts of data ( big data ) and intelligent controls in automation are among the main areas of work. Adaptive and robust technological solutions are created, for example, in the area of machine learning, tailored to the current and future requirements of the economy .

The “Working Group for Supply Chain Services” (SCS), formerly “Working Group for Technologies in the Logistics Service Industry” (ATL), in Nuremberg develops innovative solutions for the transport of people, goods and information.

The “Engineering Center for Smart Objects in Logistics” (EC-SOL) in Fürth uses the advances in basic technologies for the realization of intelligent logistic objects and researches new application possibilities.

Cooperations

There is a wide range of cooperation with the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Fraunhofer IIS is a member of the following Fraunhofer-internal groups and alliances:

  • Fraunhofer Group for Information and Communication Technology (IuK)
  • Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics (VµE)
  • Fraunhofer Group for Defense and Security Research (VVS)
  • Fraunhofer Vision Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Grid Computing Alliance

There is a close cooperation in the field of audio and multimedia technology with the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) in Ilmenau . This Fraunhofer Institute was created in 2004 from a working group belonging to Fraunhofer IIS.

Spin-offs

Since 1986, spin-offs in the private sector have created a total of ten companies. Your products and services include: a. the areas

  • Motion analysis systems
  • Electronic circuits for special applications and niche products
  • Feasibility studies on ATE modules and measuring devices, quality measurements in the audio sector
  • Development of industrial cameras and photonics equipment
  • X-ray cameras, automatic X-ray inspection systems and quality assurance systems
  • Development of audio codecs ( AACplus , mp3PRO ) for mobile devices and low data rates
  • Broadcast monitoring and embedding of audio watermarks.

In addition, a subsidiary of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was founded in 1997, the Innovationszentrum für Telekommunikationstechnik GmbH IZT . Working areas are measurement, testing and information technology as well as wireless applications and digital broadcasting. The company develops products ready for series production and closes the gap between prototypes and series products with small series production.

Infrastructure

More than 1,100 employees work at the 14 locations.

The budget of 169.9 million euros per year is financed from contract research, with the exception of core funding of 26 percent.

Since October 1, 2011, Albert Heuberger has been the managing director of Fraunhofer IIS, who succeeded Heinz Gerhäusers , who held this position from 1998 to 2011. The other institute directors are Bernhard Grill and Alexander Martin , the deputy institute directors are Randolf Hanke and Peter Dittrich. Peter Schneider is the head of the Dresden branch of the Institute for Design Automation (EAS).
