Dietmar Lorenz (born September 23, 1950 in Langenbuch , Plauen district , Saxony ; † September 8, 2021 ) was a German judoka who competed for the GDR . He was in 1980 the first German Judo - Olympic champion .

Life

Dietmar Lorenz began judo training at SV Dynamo Schleiz in 1967 during his apprenticeship as a car mechanic and in 1969 was delegated to SC Dynamo Hoppegarten , the sports club of the German People's Police . He had the rank of first lieutenant in the VP. From 1980 to 1989 he was a member of the SED . After the end of his active sports career in October 1980, he became the coach of SC Dynamo Hoppegarten. After the fall of the Wall, he was initially unemployed. From 1990 Dietmar Lorenz taught as an employee of the “Sportjugend Berlin e. V. “Children and young people and from 1992 worked as a social worker in the sports and youth center KICK Berlin-Marzahn.

Lorenz died in September 2021, two weeks before his 71st birthday.

Sports career

Dietmar Lorenz replaced Uwe Stock as GDR light heavyweight champion in 1974 and developed into the successor to Helmut Howiller , who went down in the history of the German Judo Association (DJV) as a serial winner in this weight class . After Lorenz had won the European light heavyweight title in 1975 and 1977, he belonged to the DJV selection team in 1978, which went down in European Championship history as a "miracle team" at the European Championships in Helsinki . In Helsinki he won the light heavyweight division and the open class. He also won the Jigoro Kano Cup in Tokyo in 1978 as the first non-Japanese . As a member of the GDR Olympic team, Dietmar Lorenz took part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . However, these games were boycotted by some countries , including the Japanese with Yasuhiro Yamashita , the reigning world heavyweight champion, and Sumio Endo , the world champion in the open class. First, Lorenz fought in the light heavyweight division and won the bronze medal. Then he started as an outsider in the "Open Class". To the surprise of all judo experts, he defeated the favored opponents and also won the final fight against Angelo Parisi from France, who is twelve kilograms heavier .

Dietmar Lorenz went down in history as the first German judo Olympic champion. In addition, he is so far the first and only judoka who managed to win the gold medal as a light heavyweight in the "open class".

Dietmar Lorenz was awarded the 7th Dan by the German Judo Association . He was also an honorary member of the Berlin Judo Association .
