Karl Dietrich Gerhard Barfurth (born January 25, 1849 in Dinslaken , † March 23, 1927 in Rostock ) was a German physician , anatomist , mathematician and two-time rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Dietrich Barfurth was born as the son of the weaver of the same name, Dietrich Barfurth. He enrolled at the Georg August University of Göttingen in 1871 and studied natural sciences and mathematics, which he completed in 1874 with a doctorate and in 1875 with the state examination. After graduating, Barfurth taught as a senior teacher at the high school in Cologne before he began studying medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 1879 . In 1882 he received his doctorate in medicine. In the same year Barfurth passed the medical state examination and was habilitated in anatomy in 1883. From 1888 Barfurth was a prosector at the Anatomical Institute of the University of Göttingen with Friedrich Merkel . In 1889 he accepted a professorship for comparative anatomy, histology and embryology at the University of Dorpat . In 1896 Dietrich Barfurth was appointed professor of anatomy and director of the anatomical institute at the University of Rostock , where he stayed until his retirement in 1921.

In addition to his function as director of the anatomical institute, Dietrich Barfurth was elected rector of the University of Rostock in 1902 and 1917. His work not only shaped the anatomy in Rostock, but also his work Regeneration and Transplantation (1917) and Methods for Research on Regeneration in Animals (1920) the field of developmental mechanics. In 1904 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1926, Barfurth was accepted into the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in recognition of his scientific achievements .

During his studies in 1871 he became a member of the Brunsviga fraternity in Göttingen, of which he became an honorary member in 1890; He also became a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity (1882) and the Obotritia Rostock fraternity (1919).
