Dietrich Cornelius Mülder (born May 12, 1861 in Bunde , † October 14, 1947 in Stade ) was a German high school teacher and classical philologist who researched the origin of the Iliad in the first half of the 20th century and translated the ancient Greek poet Homer into German .

Life

Born in Bunde in 1861 as the son and grandson of a teacher, he graduated from high school Georgianum in Lingen in 1880 and then studied ancient languages and history at the universities of Tübingen and Göttingen . During his studies in 1880 he became a member of the Tübingen fraternity Derendingia . He also became a member of the Frisia Göttingen . After his legal clerkship in Aurich in 1886/1888, he taught as a teacher in Leer (East Friesland) , Osnabrück , Verden , and Hildesheim . Here he married Helene in 1899Klopp (1879-1962). In 1909 he was appointed director of the Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Emden .

During the First World War , Mülder served as a captain. In 1917 he took over the position of director at the Gymnasium Athenaeum Stade , where he taught until he retired in 1926. Dietrich and Helene Mülder had three children, Jürgen Mülder (1899–1986), Luise, married. Lauenstein (1903–1996) and Dietrich Mülder (1906–2000).

In addition to his work as a teacher and director, Mülder wrote numerous scientific articles, with his interests ranging from the medieval poet Albrecht von Johansdorf to Homer . He wrote two books that went to print: The Iliad and its sources (1910) and what is probably the first German-language prose translation of the Odyssey in modern times, entitled The True, Great and Immortal Homer. I: The Odyssey 1935 was published. The title indicates that a prose translation of the Iliad was planned as a further volume. Mülder had already come a long way with this when he died. A planned handover from the estate did not materialize.

In addition, from 1902 to 1929 Mülder commented on the current classical philological publications and wrote a number of reviews on contributions by other classical philologists.

In his work, Mülder primarily concerned himself with the analysis of the Iliad and the search for the poet Homer behind it. In contradiction to the prevailing scientific opinion of his time, he defended the thesis with verve that behind the Iliad there was a single poet who had presented a planned and self-contained work of art, which, as a new creation, was based on previous works, but which had no historical of their own Core. His publications received attention in German-speaking countries, but also in other European countries, and his books were reviewed by well-known classical scholars.

For his scientific achievements he was awarded the title of professor in 1906 and on his 80th birthday he was awarded the Goethe Medal for Art and Science .

In addition, Mülder commented on the current publications of other Homer researchers and classical scholars over almost three decades under the title Reports on the Literature on Homer (Higher Critique) in the annual reports on the progress of classical antiquity .

Numerous other reviews appeared between 1906 and 1913 in the Berliner Philologische Wochenschrift (volumes 26–32).
