Dietrich Reseler

Dietrich Reseler (* around 1365 ; † 1441 ) was a Catholic theologian and lawyer . As Dietrich IV, he was Bishop of Dorpat .

Life

Dietrich Reseler came from "probably the Reseler family", after whom Reselerstrasse (now Röselerstrasse ) in Hanover was named.

He came to Rome as the legal representative of Lower Saxon nobles and before 1392 settled at the papal curia in Rome and later in Siena and became papal clerk. At the same time he studied at the University of Bologna (from 1407 full-time) and received his doctorate in canon law ( doctor decretorum ).

In the service of the Curia he succeeded, in cooperation with his compatriots Dietrich von Nieheim and Berthold Rike , in collecting lucrative benefices ; so he was about 1402-1413 vicar general in the diocese of Minden .

When Reseler's election as Bishop of Dorpat became an option , the Teutonic Order , which was influential in Livonia, hired Ludolf Grove , who was also from Hanover, to find obstacles against Reseler. However, this soon sided with Reseler's party. In 1413 Reseler was elected bishop against the will of the order, not least because of his good contacts with the curia. He held the office until the end of his life.

In the late Middle Ages , the clergy was given a rare honor: In the St. Gallus Chapel on Burgstrasse (Hanover) at the corner of Ballhofstrasse , a soul mass was celebrated for Reseler one week after the Assumption of Mary (August 15) .
