Life

Dimitri Tuptalo

Dimitri von Rostow came from a noble family. His father was Sawwa Grigoryevich Tuptalo († January 5, 1703), his mother Marija Michajlowna († March 29, 1689). In 1660 the family moved to Kiev . 1662–1665 he studied at the college founded by Metropolitan Petro Mohyla . Then he entered the monastery of St. Cyril in Kiev. On July 9, 1668 he received the name Dimitri at the monk ordination . On May 23, 1675 he was ordained a priest monk in the Trinity Monastery of Gustyn ( Pryluky district ) . Dimitrij was characterized by firmness of character, erudition and the gift of the word. In 1675 he preached in Chernihiv , in 1677 in Slutsk and in 1679 in Baturyn . His speeches were typical of the Baroque period : metaphors , allegories , emblems , literary topoi , rhetorical figures , questions and exclamations were frequent. In 1681 he became hegumen in the Transfiguration Monastery of Maksakov ( Borsna district ), in 1682 in the Nicholas Monastery near Baturyn. In 1684 he began his life's work, called the book with the biographies of the saints , called Reading Mines. Its sources were the Menologium of Symeon Metaphrastes , the reading mines of Metropolitan Makari (1482–1563) and the collections of vitamins of the Bollandists . The Dimitris reading seminars have been widespread for centuries and have found and continue to find a large audience. There has been no attempt to replace it with any other work of this type. In 1694 Dimitri Hegumen was in the monastery of St. Peter and Paul near Hluchiw , in 1697 in the monastery of St. Cyril in Kiev and in 1699 Archimandrite in the Transfiguration Monastery in Novhorod-Siverskyj . On March 23, 1701 Dimitri was ordained bishop in Moscow . On January 4, 1702 he became Metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl . Above all, he worked for the formation of the clergy and remedied grievances. On April 22, 1757 Dimitrij was canonized . His feast day is October 28th / November 10th.
