The Julcán District is located in the Julcán Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was established on June 12, 1961. It has an area of ​​228 km². The 2017 census counted 12,578 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 15,627, in 2007 13,012. The district administration is located in the provincial capital Julcán at an altitude of 3404  m with 2800 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Julcán District is located in the north in the Julcán Province. The Río Moche crosses the north of the district and drains it. The southern part of the district is drained by the Río Virú (in the upper reaches of the Río Huacapongo) to the southwest.

The Julcan district is bordered on the southwest by the district Carabamba , the west by the district Mache ( province Otuzco ) on the north by the district Agallpampa (also in the province of Otuzco), in the northeast on the district Quiruvilca ( province of Santiago de Chuco ), in South-east to the Calamarca district and in the extreme south to the Huaso district .
