The founder of the order, Blessed César de Bus

The Doktrinarier ( Latin : Congregatio Patrum doctrinae christianae , abbreviation : DC ), also known as priests of Christian doctrine , are a Roman Catholic priestly congregation . It was founded in Avignon in 1592 by César de Bus (1544–1607 in Avignon) and was particularly devoted to pastoral care , the education of young people and teaching (Latin: doctrina = teaching or science).

Origin story

The doctrinarians were initially an association of priests and lay people founded in Rome by Marco de Sadis Cusani from Milan around 1560 , who mainly gave religious instruction. From this emerged the “Brotherhood of Christian Teaching ” and the “Secular Priests of Christian Teaching”. Pope Benedict XIV joined these two organizations in 1747 with the “Congregation for Christian Doctrine” formed by César de Bus in 1592 and confirmed by Pope Clement VIII in 1597 .

History of the Order of the Priests

After a somewhat dissolute life, César de Bus experienced an inner change in 1575 and gained new spiritual experiences. Since then he has devoted himself to the study of Christian doctrine and the preaching of the gospel . This inspired him to found a priestly association that should focus on teaching and studying Christian doctrine. On September 29, 1592 , the founding assembly was held with several world priests . On December 23, 1597, Pope Clement VIII granted his license to practice medicine ; by the death of the founder (1607) the new community had grown up on three houses in Toulouse , Brive-la-Gaillarde and Avignon. On April 9, 1616, Pope Paul V transformed the previous association into a congregation. In 1658, Pope Alexander VII granted the order the right to educate and thus teach grammar , rhetoric and philosophy . The order members now took the religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience , thus it became an institute of consecrated life . 1726 was them by Pope Benedict XIII. the church of Santa Maria in Monticelli was transferred as the house church and in 1747, under Benedict XIV, the "priests and brothers of Christian teaching" merged to form the final congregation "priests of Christian teaching". At the time of the French Revolution (1789 to 1799) the order was banned in France and its members were persecuted.
