Domenico Lalli

(Benedetto) Domenico Lalli (actually Nicolò Sebastiano Biancardi ; born March 27, 1679 in Naples , † October 9, 1741 in Venice ) was an Italian librettist .

Life

Biancardi was employed by the Annunziata Brotherhood in Naples . When he was accused of theft in 1706, he fled to Rome . There he met the composer Emanuele d'Astorga , with whom he then wandered through Italy . In 1709 he took the pseudonym Domenico Lalli. From 1710 to 1718 he wrote libretti for the Venetian Teatro San Cassiano , which were set to music by the most important composers in Venice; from 1719 he was impresario of the Teatro San Samuele and the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo . In the early 1720s he worked with Franz Anton von Harrach , the Archbishop of Salzburg , from 1727 to 1740 he was court poet for Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria . During this time he made the acquaintance of Metastasio and Goldoni ; The latter often praised his "poetic genius".

style

With the exception of Elisa (1711), the first opera buffa ever performed in Venice, most of Lalli's works correspond to the contemporary style of the opera seria .
