Dominikus Bucher

Dominikus II. Bucher OSB (born September 24, 1871 in Alpnach as Jakob Gottlieb Bucher ; † June 23, 1945 in Bozen ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1938 until his death he was abbot of the Muri-Gries Abbey in Bozen ( South Tyrol ).

biography

The son of the farmer and cheese maker Josef Alois Bucher and Anna Maria Gander attended the high school run by Benedictines in Sarnen . He was one of the first students to take the federal Matura at this school . In 1894 he made his profession and studied theology in the monastery school of Gries near Bozen. He was ordained two years later .

From 1897 to 1920 Bucher worked as a teacher at the Sarnen high school (today's Obwalden canton school ). He then became dean of Muri-Gries Abbey and lecturer in canon law . He also wrote books on the history of the abbey and the college. On September 19, 1938 Bucher was elected abbot of Muri and Prior in Gries and then led the abbey through the difficult war years. In 1939 he received the honorary citizenship of the Alpnach community and that of the canton of Obwalden from the rural community .
