Donald Mayberry

Donald "Don" Mayberry (* around 1951 in Columbia , Tennessee ; † 12. April 2011 in Farmington Hills ) was an American jazz - bassist and music producer .

Mayberry grew up in Detroit , attended Cass Tech High School and worked with jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby as a teenager ; after graduation he went on tour with David Bowie . He graduated from the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University . During his military service he performed with the US Army Symphonic Band in Germany. He then played in JC Heard's big band, which also appeared in France in 1980, and with Clark Terry . Mayberry was a longtime member of the Detroit jazz scene; there he accompanied u. a. Lena Horne , Joe Williams , Diane Schuur , Mel Tormé , Rosemary Clooney , Johnny Mathis , Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan . He has also worked with Tommy Flanagan , Stanley Turrentine , Art Blakey , A. Spencer Barefield and Dizzy Gillespie , and as a session musician with blues, funk and smooth jazz musicians such as Tessie Hill, Calvin Brooks and Solar Funk. Most recently he played in the formation Motownbeat and performed in a duo with Aretha Franklin (as a pianist) at the New York club Tavern on the Green . He released the double CD Kaleidoscope - Don Mayberry with Special Guests on Alembic Art; with Ange Smith he recorded the spiritual album Let My People Go in 1995 . In 1999 he produced the George Benson album Sax Master .
