Donald McIntyre

Sir Donald McIntyre (born October 22, 1934 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand opera singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

He took up the profession of elementary school teacher, but decided to pursue a career as a singer. He received his vocal training first in New Zealand from Hubert Milverton-Carva in Auckland. After receiving a government scholarship, he continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music in London. In 1959 he made his debut at the Welsh National Opera as Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco . In the following years he was a member of Sadler's Wells Opera , where he also sang parts in Mozart and Verdi operas in English.

He gained fame primarily through his interpretation of the great Wagner roles: Wotan / Wanderer, Hans Sachs, Holländer, Telramund, Kurwenal; in Parsifal he sang Klingsor, Amfortas and Gurnemanz over the years. He made his debut in Bayreuth in 1967 as Telramund in Lohengrin . Here he was u. a. Also from 1976 to 1980 at the legendary Boulez / Chereau - ring heard as Wotan / Wanderer. He sang the role of Wotan a. a. also at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, where he has appeared in numerous other roles over the years. Further stations in his career included the Vienna State Opera , La Scala in Milan , and the opera houses in Hamburg , Munich , Paris and Buenos Aires . For the reopening of the Zurich Opera House in 1984 he sang the role of Hans Sachs in the Meistersingers . He also appeared repeatedly in opera productions in his New Zealand homeland.

In addition to the German opera repertoire - Strauss (in Elektra , Salome , Arabella , Die Frau ohne Schatten ), Beethoven ( Fidelio ), Mozart ( Die Zauberflöte ), Berg ( Wozzeck ), Weber ( Der Freischütz ), Hindemith ( Cardillac ) and others. v. a. m. - he also sang some roles in the Italian (Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca , Prospero in Berio's Un re in ascolto ) and French (Golaud and Arkel in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande ) repertoire, as well as the role of Jaroslav Prus in Czech in Janáček's Věc Makropulos .

In 1992 he was raised to the nobility by the British Queen Elizabeth II .

He continued to sing. In 2004 he could be heard in Longborough as “Wotan / Wanderer”, in March 2006 in Wellington as “Gurnemanz” and in the small role of the “old servant” in Elektra in 2013 in Aix en Provence and in 2014 at La Scala in Milan.

In 2019 he published his memoir The Only Way Is Up .
