History and location

Landwehr marching out through the Upper Gate (2011)

The festival takes place between the Upper and Lower Gates, built in 1714 and 1726, the former only entrances to the previously completely walled monastery complex, the former imperial abbey of the Premonstratensian founded in 1126 . Both double-winged gates, which can still be locked today, are originally painted and adorned in the center with the coat of arms of the former Reich Abbot Hermann Vogler (* 1680; † 1749?). Vogler's coat of arms is framed by the double-headed, long-necked imperial eagle in gold on black, the symbol of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire . It indicates that the monastery belonged to the empire and was in possession of blood jurisdiction (from 1616).

Together with the redesign of the Lower Gate, the 600th anniversary of the monastery was celebrated in 1726. The highlight of the celebrations at that time was the transfer of the holy bodies of the Christian martyrs and married couple Renatus and Domitia of Rome, where they were acquired in the collegiate church of the monastery where they are still located in 2012. The chronicle reports of over 15,000 pilgrims at this church festival, which closes the circle for the Red Village Festival. Essential parts of Upper Swabia belonged to Upper Austria until the Peace of Pressburg in 1805 . At that time, the Swabian part of Upper Austria was called Swabian Austria .

Once you have passed the Upper Gate, the Aureliusturm is in the immediate vicinity, a remnant of the old burnt down monastery complex of Abbot Martin Hesser (1420 to 1457). In it hangs the poor sinners bell , which has been used for certain judgments since the approval of the High Court of Justice in 1616. The main thoroughfare of the complex ran from the upper gate in the west and the lower gate in the east within the monastery area and also marks the festival area. In addition, the three-wing utility building to the south is added. It measures from one hundred and forty-three to ninety-three meters and was built in 1724. The inner courtyard is one hectare in size . At that time, the economy, together with the one hundred hectare Verenahof, which still exists today, served to supply the monastery with agriculture. Today it houses the town hall, building yard, post office, fire station of the local volunteer fire brigade , Catholic public library, branch of the Kreissparkasse Biberach , club rooms and apartments.

The festival program is drawn up by a village festival committee consisting of members of the local community. Admission costs one euro road toll at the entrance gates. The aim is to show the diversity of village life in Upper Swabia, then and now.
