The village church Schöngleina is a listed Protestant parish church in Schöngleina , a municipality in the Saale-Holzland district ( Thuringia ). The congregation belonging to the Eisenberg parish in the Protestant church in Central Germany was awarded the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize 2003 for its work in maintaining and restoring the church in June 2003 .

history

The chapel , first mentioned in a document in 1228, has been attested as a parish church since 1356 with a pleban operating there . The owners of the chapel were the lords of Lobdeburg Burgau.

Around 1610 the patron Valentin von Lichtenstein had a profound renovation carried out. The building was changed again in the 18th century and renovated for the last time in 1959. Since then the building has been left to decay. Comprehensive security measures were taken in 1992.

During the GDR era, the management of the socialist model fruit orchard located in Schöngleina left the church neglected. In the end, there were plans to demolish the building and build new developments. The church was largely derelict in 1993, the ceiling partially collapsed, and rotten roof beams and rubble lay on the floor.

A development association founded in 1995 was able to carry out extensive rescue measures with the support of the parish and the German Foundation for Monument Protection . The roof structure was renovated, the dry rot removed and the ceiling beams renewed. The load-bearing capacity of the ridge and the roof structure was guaranteed. During security measures in 1997, fresco paintings were uncovered in the entire area of the choir vault . In September 2000 the tower dome was put back on and slated and a new belfry was built. The masonry of the base was renovated, the half-timbered structure was added and the roof over the nave was re-covered. During the renovation work from 2005 to 2006, the interior was colored, and window frames and the ceiling including interior plaster renewed. The church building is used today for concerts and events.

The high hall closes with a polygonal choir , it is crowned on the west side by a roof turret.

The walls on the north side of the nave and on the choir are structured by renewed, two-lane tracery windows. The two-storey box extension on the south side was built in 1610, with a stair tower at the angle to the choir. The basket arched triumphal arch was also drawn in around 1610, at the same time the star vault in the choir was renewed. Fragments of figurative paintings, including angels making music, have been preserved under the recent paintwork. The arched openings of the boxes on the south side, the triumphal arch and the portals show a delicate edge profile.

On the upper floor, a coat of arms of V. von Lichtenhain with a building inscription and a date was attached between the openings of the boxes. The cove ceiling in the ship is divided lengthways. The three-storey gallery on the north side was erected around 1744. The gallery on the west side was extended in 1766 when the organ was built.

Furnishing

The new organ was inaugurated on May 15, 2005 with the participation of the Tokyo soloists. It was built by the organ builders Rolf Künzel and Sebastian Näther. The restored pulpit altar was rebuilt in 2007.
