At an early age, at the age of nine, Dorothee Rätsch began to deal with sculptural design in children's and youth groups. She didn't let go of this topic during and after her apprenticeship as a gardener. In addition to working in agriculture, she attended evening high school and seminars at the Humboldt University in Berlin , and worked on her artistic skills in courses and courses. She was so successful as an autodidact that in 1969, after passing the entrance exam, she was accepted as a candidate and in 1971 as a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . This was the prerequisite for access to the state art market and public contracts.

Working as a course leader with children and young people was and is particularly important to her. From 1991 she worked in an ABM position in the cultural sector and from 1994 to 1999 she helped set up the Slawendorf Passentin archaeological open-air museum as a medieval place of learning and experience.

Dorothee Rätsch has been working as a freelance sculptor again since 2000, and now lives and works in Passentin ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ), where a sculpture garden was created on her property .
