Tricorn (Binzen)

The Three-Cornered Hat is a sculpture of aluminum in Binzen in the district Lörrach . It is located in the middle of the roundabout at the intermunicipal industrial park of the same name, which was created in 1995. The work of art in public space symbolizes both the square of the same name, which meet on the streets from three directions, the border triangle and the industrial park of the same name.

The object with three approximately eight meters long, mutually penetrating metal spikes comes from the artist Reinhard Bombsch from Efringen-Kirchen . The strictly geometric, no-frills, gray sculpture protrudes from a circular bed of gravel, which is framed by a circular green area. It was opened with a ceremony on July 13, 2001 in the presence of then (1989–2012) Mayor Ulrich May and then District Administrator Alois Rübsamen . The sculpture was sponsored by the Sparkasse Markgräflerland Foundation. The sculpture is illuminated in the evening and night.

Location and routes

The area around the Dreispitz roundabout is very busy and is considered a strategically important traffic junction in the Lörrach district. On average over 5.6 million vehicles drive through the roundabout each year.

At the roundabout , state road  134 from the northeast from Binzen meets federal road 3 , which , coming from Weil am Rhein in the south, is diverted west towards Eimeldingen . Not far from the roundabout there is a truck stop and motorway junction 2 of the A 98 to the west . Both the autobahn and the state road lead eastwards over the Lucke to Lörrach and into the Wiesental . The cycle paths also run past the roundabout and connect the Markgräflerland with the Kander and Wiesental. At the roundabout, a bus stop is three-cornered hat of public transport .

Immediately north of the roundabout is the route of the Kandertalbahn , which continues on the B 3 to its stop at Haltingen train station and is led over a level crossing with half barriers at the roundabout .

The original and older Dreispitz area is bounded by the L 134, the B 3 and the A 98. The acute-angled triangular terrain, at the corresponding corner of which the roundabout is located, forms an area of ​​almost 8.5 hectares. The newer Dreispitz area is located south of the B 3 and its built-up area is now around 22.3 hectares. The street names in the southern industrial park all have names of scientists.

Controversy about traffic hazards and demolition

Based on the statistics on traffic accidents, the art in the roundabout was checked by an expert and should also be removed as part of the structural measures required by the district administration to prevent accidents - including the creation of a gravel bed. In a first immediate measure, the State Ministry of Transport ordered the maximum speed in the roundabout to be reduced to 30 km / h. A citizens' initiative launched by Ulrich May resisted the threat of demolition and started a petition. The tax office declared donations for the preservation of the Dreispitz as a cultural monument to be tax deductible. In addition to the more than 5,300 signatories of the petition, a number of politicians from the region have spoken out against the demolition, just like the municipality of Binzen, which on June 27, 2017 filed an objection to the removal order of the district office Lörrach. In January 2018, the petitions committee of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament spoke in favor of preserving the sculpture, but called for additional structural measures to prevent accidents.
