Drudkh (from Sanskrit druma , "tree") is a Ukrainian band that mixes folk and black metal elements. It was written by Roman Sayenko, band leader of Hate Forest , Dark Ages and Blood of Kingu , who released two to three albums a year with different projects, Thurios, the band leader of Astrofaes and ex-member of Hate Forest and Yuriy Synytsky, drummer of Lucifugum and definition Sane, founded.

During their careers, the members of Drudkh have always been mysterious, even for a black metal band. They did not give interviews and did not publish the lyrics of several albums. The music, which is strongly influenced by folk , focuses on Slavic mythology , seasons and poetry. Many of the texts are based on the work of Ukrainian poets, especially Taras Shevchenko . According to the description on the side of their original label Supernal Music, the band is close to the ideas of the Conservative Revolution , which the label calls in favor of “heroic, traditionalist values and living with nature, instead of rape” against the “ degenerate modern, liberal Ideology of Cosmopolitanism , Urbanism and Secularism ”and as their continuation or revival Alex Kurtagić , operator of Supernal Music, which Black Metal sees. The band is often assigned to the NSBM , which Gunnar Sauermann from Metal Hammer claims is a rumor and definitely wrong. Because of his job, he often discussed with Roman Sayenko; he does not want to speak publicly what Sauermann respects. However, an authorized biography is planned that will explain a lot. If people refuse to believe Sayenko's few public statements, be it her loss.

Drudkh didn't have an official website until 2009, when her label Season of Mist created an official MySpace page, which is also not managed by the band.

history

Drudkh released six albums and one EP on the English extreme metal label Supernal Music . All releases (except the EP) were also re-released on vinyl by the two Finnish labels Northern Heritage and Faustian Distribution .

The first album, Forgotten Legends , was released on February 23, 2003. On the album, the band found their well-known "epic" sound, the three songs and the outro last almost 40 minutes; the longest song, False Dawn, is almost 16 minutes long.

Autumn Aurora was released on November 28, 2004. Although it had the same mood and atmosphere as the previous album, it differs from it in the synthesizers and other keyboards used .

After Autumn Aurora , Amorth (drums, keyboards) joined the band, replacing Yuriy.

The Swan Road ( Лебединий Шлях ) was published on March 14, 2005 and represented a style break in several ways. This was well received. It was the first Drudkh album to be accompanied by printed texts, all copied or adapted from Taras Shevchenko's The Haidamakas and dealing with the Ukrainian anti-Polish peasant uprisings of 1768. Along with Shevchenko's poems, the material could also be described as more nationalistic (a development that continued on the next album). The atmosphere of the music is more driving, the drums are very distinctively mixed and use far more blast beats than before.

On March 23, 2006 Drudkh released Blood in Our Wells ( Кров у Наших Криницях ), again on Supernal Music. This album used poetry by four of the most famous Ukrainian authors of the 19th and 20th centuries (including Oleksandr Oles and Lina Kostenko ), the album itself was dedicated to the memory of Stepan Bandera , the legendary leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists . Musically, the album combines progressive rock influences and guitar solos in the style of heavy metal with the previous characteristics of the band, i.e. black metal and traditional Ukrainian folk elements. The album uses various samples from the 2003 film Mamy . Many fans consider it the best release of the band.

After Blood was released in Our Wells , Amorth was banned from the band, while Krechet (bass) and Vlad (drums) joined.

On October 19, Songs of Grief and Solitude ( Пісні Скорботи і Самітності ) was released, which again represented a change of direction for the band. Unlike the previous albums influenced by black metal, this release consists of folk music that is inspired or copied from previous albums by the band. (e.g. The Cranes Will Never Return Here is based on a riff from the song Solitude from the album Blood in Our Wells and Archaic Dance is based on a riff from the song Glare of 1768 by The Swan Road ). It is completely instrumental, with few drums and lots of woodwind instruments . The album received a mixed reception as some fans criticized the band for reusing old material while others praised the reinvention of their own sound.

On April 16, 2007, Supernal Music released the EP Anti-Urban , a 10 " picture disc with colored vinyl that was limited to 999 copies. The EP demonstrated a style change back to the band's earlier style and combined black metal and funeral -Doom -Influences . It was more minimalistic than the band's previous releases and led some fans to compare it to Forgotten Legends, and it received mixed reception.

The next release, Estrangement ( Відчуженість ), was released on August 25, 2007 as a deluxe version. The album, previously called River of Tears , has been rumored to sound more like Burzum than previous releases. The album is more minimalistic than the previous one, the lyrics are based entirely on the work of the Ukrainian poet Oleh Olschytsch during 1931 & 1932. It was received largely positively, with many fans praising it as a return to the earlier style and highlighting it with many solos musical skills of the members. Also, for the first time since The Swan Road , blast beats are used again . A spoken intro in the first song comes from the 1995 Ukrainian film Atentat , which is about the life and murder of Stepan Bandera .

In autumn 2008, the band went under contract with the French label Season of Mist . On June 22nd, 2009 (July 14th in the United States ), the seventh studio album Microcosmos was released on the Underground Activists label ; it was published by Season of Mist. The album was released on CD digipak and as a limited box with an MCD re-release of the EP Anti-Urban . On this album the band again uses lyrics by Ukrainian poets, such as B. Ivan Franko , Oleh Olschytsch or Bogdan Rubchak . As in Estrangement , the outro comes from the film Atentat . In November 2009, Season of Mist announced that they would re-release all of the band's recordings, starting with a remastered version of Forgotten Legends and Autumn Aurora . This new edition of all titles has now been completed.

This had some magazines in Germany boycotting the Ukrainians. This rumor is most definitely not true though, as I had the privilege to talk and discuss with Roman Saenko a lot due to my job. Sadly he does not want to speak in public, which I have to respect. There will be an approved biography soon though, which will explain a lot. If people do not want to believe the few and very clear words, which Roman has publicly said, it is their own loss. "
