List of grape varieties

The red wine variety Dureza is an autochthonous variety from the north of the Ardèche department in southern France on the orographic right-hand side of the Rhone . From there, the vine was transported to the Drôme and Isère valleys . Today the variety is not recommended in any appellation and is almost extinct. In 1988, only one hectare of vineyards was raised in France after 11 hectares were known at the end of the 1970s.

The late-ripening variety (it ripens 20 - 25 days after the Chasselas ) produces very dark, rustic wines that are sorted are not suitable for the development of quality wines.

In 1998, however, the Dureza regained importance. According to DNA analyzes by the University of California in Davis, the well-known red grape variety Syrah emerged from a presumably natural cross between Dureza and the white Mondeuse Blanche variety . There is also a connection to the Teroldego grape variety , which arose from the same - as yet unknown - crossing as the Dureza variety. The Dureza was often confused with the varieties Durif , Peloursin and Syrah because of their common origin .
