100 Gecs (stylized as 100 gecs ) is an American music duo consisting of Dylan Brady and Laura Les . The two grew up in the suburbs of St. Louis and were active in the city's music scene. In 2015, they began producing music together and performing it at virtual music festivals while living in different cities. 100 Gecs released their first studio album 1000 Gecs in May 2019 , which earned them greater recognition. Her remix album 1000 gecs and The Tree of Clues followed in 2020 . Her stubborn, post-ironic music mixes different genres .

history

Brady and Les are from near St. Louis, Brady grew up in Kirkwood and Les in Webster Groves . They first met at a party in 2012 and became friends.

Les played the guitar when he was young and had the desire to become a songwriter . She published her first own work under the artist name "osno1". A distinctive mark was her high pitched vocals , which according to information provided by Nightcore - remixes inspired and also with the fact that she does not like her natural voice. She later moved to Chicago to study audio production.

Brady sang in the high school in the choir , played piano and produced songs. After studying in St. Louis for a year, he dropped out in 2016 and moved to Los Angeles. Brady released several songs, EPs and an album under his own name , but also worked for other musicians.

In the winter of 2015, Brady and Les produced music together for the first time, which they recorded in Chicago and released on the EP 100 Gecs in July 2016 . They allegedly chose the name "100 Gecs" after seeing graffiti of the same name in Chicago. According to another story, the duo came up with the name when Les accidentally ordered 100 live geckos online. Since they were working on their own projects at the time, they were initially unable to implement plans for further joint recordings.

Les was invited to play a live set at the Coalchella virtual music festival in 2018 . She invited Brady and together they produced some new songs. They repeated this for the Fire Festival 2019, which also takes place in the game Minecraft . They finally released many of the songs they created in May on their debut album 1000 gecs. Together with Slowthai , 100 Gecs were a support act for the hip-hop collective Brockhampton on their US tour in 2019. They also headlined six other shows of their own during the tour. In February 2020 they announced their own world tour.

After releasing some remixes as singles, their remix album 1000 gecs and The Tree of Clues was released on Atlantic Records in June 2020 . It features artists like AG Cook , Injury Reserve , Dorian Electra , Charli XCX , Rico Nasty , Kero Kero Bonito and Fall Out Boy , but also some of their fans .

style

The duo work on tracks by exchanging and constantly revising Logic Pro project files. The duo therefore calls the criticism “extremely online ”, which is also reflected in their story and allusions in their songs. Her music is described as loud, chaotic, constantly changing shape and idiosyncratic; she particularly emphasizes the contrasts and contradictions between different genres . The duo particularly falls back on disreputable and out-of-fashion styles such as dubstep , death metal or pop-punk , without tying themselves to a genre. Critics describe their texts as capriciously erratic or a balanced mixture of humor and pathos . Despite all the nonsense, you can still see her serious interest in music. At its core, their music is heartwarming and surprisingly sweet.

According to their own statements, the style of 100 Gecs is influenced by John Zorn , Cannibal Corpse , Youtube and Nightcore , among others .
