Dzielnica XIII Podgórze is the thirteenth district of Krakow in Poland , it covers an area of 25.67 km² and has 38,423 inhabitants with a population density of 1,497 inhabitants / km². It is named after the city of Podgórze , founded in 1784 as Josephstadt on the southern bank of the Vistula , which in 1915 had an area of 5.48 km² and was incorporated into Krakow.
In 1954 a reorganization into six districts was introduced, the district called Podgórze then included the entire area of Kraków south of the Vistula (77.7 km²). The population increased u. a. through the construction of prefabricated housing estates from 93,000 in 1960 to 109,000 in 1970. In 1973 and 1986 the district was enlarged to 130.9 km² by incorporation into Krakow south of the Vistula. In 1990 it had 205,000 inhabitants, but was then divided into six smaller districts (except XIII Podgórze: Dębniki , Łagiewniki-Borek Fałęcki , Swoszowice , Podgórze Duchackie , Bieżanów-Prokocim ).
