Eßleben is a district of Eßleben-Teutleben within the rural community of Buttstädt in the Sömmerda district in Thuringia .

location

Eßleben is located on the northeastern edge of the Thuringian Basin between the Ettersberg and the Finns and north of Teutleben .

history

The village was first mentioned on April 18, 1063. At that time the village was taxable to the Archbishop of Mainz. Later the community was owned by changing owners.

In the 16th century the place belonged to the Albertine office of Eckartsberga . In 1555 Kurt von Mülich bought the place and added it to the Hardisleben manor . This was bought by Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Sachsen-Weimar in 1585 and formed the Hardisleben office from it . Eßleben became an object of dispute because it was still under the sovereignty of the Albertine Electorate of Saxony or the Principality of Saxony-Weissenfels and, as such, fell under the administration of the Eckartsberga Office. On the other hand, it was part of the Ernestine Ministry of Hardisleben, which belonged to the duchies of Saxony-Weimar (1585–1603 and 1672–1741), Saxony-Altenburg (1603–1672) and Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach (from 1741). It was not until the Congress of Vienna in 1815 that Eßleben was fully assigned to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and, in 1817, incorporated into the Buttstädt office.

The Romanesque village church dates from 1267. Further details can be found in the article on the core parish.

In 1974, Eßleben merged with the neighboring town of Teutleben to form the municipality of Eßleben-Teutleben, which was added to the rural municipality of Buttstädt on January 1, 2019, but continues to exist as a district.
