history

The ERF Germany has its history in Switzerland. The trigger for this Christian radio was an international conference of Youth for Christ 1948 in Beatenberg with the participation of Billy Graham , Bill Bright and Hermann Schulte on the topic of the Christian mission for Europe. Paul E. Freed was also a conference participant.

“Europe has some significant focal points for Gospel work. Beatenberg in Switzerland is one of them. "

- Paul E. Freed : Good news, we announce to the people.

The "International Evangelization Society" founded by Freed on February 11, 1952, began broadcasting Christian programs for Spain on February 22, 1954 from the then internationally administered city of Tangier . From June 1956 a German department was set up in the new mission society. In the fall of 1956 Tangier came back to Morocco , whose government wanted to nationalize all radio stations by the end of 1959. Under very difficult economic conditions, a contract was signed with Radio Monte Carlo on September 19, 1959 for the purchase of airtime. The mission society was now called Trans World Radio . On September 20, 1959, German radio work began in the premises of Hermann Schulte's publishing house in Wetzlar (now Gerth Medien ), which was founded in 1949 . Hermann Schulte began Christian radio work on Radio Luxemburg as early as 1957. On October 19, 1959, the German support association "Evangeliums-Rundfunk" was founded in Wetzlar. The eight founders included Paul E. Freed, Gertrud Wasserzug (Bible School Beatenberg), the publisher Hermann Schulte and the evangelist Anton Schulte . From April 1960, Horst Marquardt , who later became head of the company for many years, worked with the company. From February 5, 1961 on, Christian programs were broadcast every quarter and half hour in German and, through Trans World Radio, in other European languages. Very soon the audience in Germany, Switzerland and Austria grew together to become a friendly audience. From May 1968 there was a Swiss branch of the ERF, and in 1972 an office. The Swiss Association of Gospel Broadcasting was founded in 1973. Work first took place in Herrliberg , then in Pfäffikon ZH .
