The ERG SpA ( acronym for Edoardo Refinery Garrone ) is an Italian energy provider based in Genoa . The company operates in the wind , hydropower , solar and natural gas sectors.
history
The company was founded on June 2nd, 1938 by Edoardo Garrone in San Quirico d'Orcia . At that time it was limited to trading in petroleum products. In the post-war period, the first oil products are obtained from the sediment in the maintenance of ship tankers that enter the port for inspection or maintenance work. This is pioneering work that pays for itself in a very short time. The company grew rapidly from 1947 to 1952. In 1947 there were 350 tons of oil products, in 1952 more than 200,000 tons were extracted. The company employed more than 100 people at the time. An important contract with BP (then British Petroleum), the signing of a 10 year contract in 1958 and BP's equity stake move the company forward.
Due to the increase in oil consumption in the 1960s and Italy's good location in the Mediterranean, the capacity of the San Quirico refinery rose to 4.0 Mton / a by 1962. ERG now employed more than 600 people. ERG planned the transport of oil via newly built oil pipelines to the economically strong north-west of Italy. During the construction of the pipeline, the founder Edoardo Garrone died in 1963. He was replaced by his son Riccardo , who now took over the chairmanship of ERG.
The project was completed in 1967 and Arquata Scrivia became the main oil logistics center in Italy for many years. In 1971 the ISAB (Sicilian Asphalt and Bitumen Industry) project was born in Priolo Gargallo . Here - in the Augusta-Priolo complex - a refinery with 10 Mton / a is being built, the production of which is intended for the international market. Due to the first oil crisis , the construction was completed in December 1975. The first energy-saving measures are born (unleaded petrol and gas oil with a minimum of sulfur). In 1980, ERG decided to close the Genoa refinery (which it did in 1988) and to acquire shares in the ISAB refinery complex.
In 1984 ERG bought 780 branches from "ELF Italiana" and a year later 1700 branches and wholesale structures from "Chevron Oil Italiana". ERG also participates in refineries in Trecate and Rome as well as a depot and the lubricant plant in Savona . ERG Petroli was founded to manage the commercial wholesale and retail activities.
In 1993, ERG cooperated with Edison Mission Energy and signed a partnership agreement that included an investment (construction of a new power plant) of more than 2000 billion lire (more than 1 billion euros). ERG thus expanded its branches of business. The company decided to go public and was successful. In April 2000, the ISAB power plant with an output of 512 MW went online and the official entry into the energy market was completed. In 2002 ERG and Eni decided to combine two large refineries in order to complement each other.
Reorientation towards renewable energies
The entry into renewable energies followed in 2006 with the takeover of EnerTAD SpA, which is active in the manufacture of wind turbines
ERG has been active in the wind energy sector in Italy, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and the United Kingdom since 2007 .
With the acquisition of the Italian division of E.ON in 2015, ERG entered the hydropower sector and operates hydropower plants in the regions of Umbria , Marche and Lazio .
In January 2018, ERG sold its majority stake in the oil company TotalErg SpA, thereby completing the company's complete realignment towards renewable energies.
The entry into solar energy came in mid-2018. Today, ERG operates 30 photovoltaic ground-mounted systems in 8 Italian regions with an output of 89 MWp.
