Life and accomplishments

Eberhardt Hengst was born on December 14, 1917 in Zwickau. After school, Reich labor service and military service, the war deployment already followed. On a temporary leave of absence, he studied a few trimesters at the Forestry University in Tharandt . During the Second World War he suffered a number of wounds, some of them severe. After the end of the war, in 1945, Hengst continued his studies of forest sciences at the forestry faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in Hann. Münden and finished it in 1948 with an excellent diploma. From 1949 to 1952 he was first district manager in the Dresdner Heide , where he also taught part-time as a technical college teacher at the vocational school for the forestry apprentices of the Dresden district.

In 1952, Hengst moved to the Institute for Forest Yield Science at the Faculty of Forestry at the Technical University of Dresden in Tharandt. He initially worked as a research assistant and in 1956 with the signature The Douglas Tharandt 1954. A ertragskundliche and silvicultural investigation into the middle layers of Germany doctorate . In 1961 the habilitation followed with the treatise Growth and Yield of the Pure Beech Stand in the Ore Mountains , a final evaluation of the test areas of the former Saxon Forest Research Institute. Hengst not only gave lectures on yield science, but also held lectures on the disciplines of silviculture and forest protection for several years . He was a valued university professor who impressed with the conciseness of his lectures and exercises as well as the logical-didactic structure of his thoughts. Hengst supervised numerous diploma and doctoral students as well as branch offices for distance learning.

Despite his significant contributions to research and teaching, he was refused a higher teaching post. Because his attitude towards the freedom of science could not be corrupted by party-political guidelines of the SED rulers.

Forester Hengst was still active until his 70th birthday in 1987. After the fall of the Wall in 1989 , he played a major role in the reorganization of the Saxon State Forestry Administration and the reorganization of academic forestry training in Tharandt. He also dealt with the reprivatisation of the forest expropriated by the communists and socialists after 1945 and with natural forest management.

From Hengst mind are more than 160 scientific publications on forestry scientific disciplines Yield Science and Forest Management . He participated in the forest yield theory (1966) written by Werner Erteld , which was a standard textbook in this subject in forestry university teaching in the GDR . Together with Johannes Blanckmeister , he also published the book Die Fichte im Mittelgebirge (1971).

In addition, Hengst was involved in the “Wachwitzer Kreis” to upgrade the former Wettin ruling house and for the center of a transnational cultural area around Prince Albert and Princess Elmira of Saxony. Most recently, Hengst had plans for a new center and museum in Schloss zu Tharandt, which he hoped would provide impetus for the world's oldest forestry university with global appeal.

After long-term health problems, Chief Forester Eberhardt Hengst died on June 18, 1996 in Dresden.
