Eden of the East ( Japanese 東 の エ デ ン , Higashi no Eden , Eng. " Eden of the East") is an anime television series that was first shown on April 9, 2009 as part of the noitaminA series on Fuji TV . It was created in the animation studio Production IG and is based on an idea implemented by director and screenwriter Kenji Kamiyama .
The series is thus also the first within A &A that does not build on an already existing work.
The story is about Saki Morimi, who, under strange circumstances, meets Akira Takizawa, who has no memories of his past and who carries a strange mobile phone with him. The pair discover that Takizawa is part of a game of life and death that aims to save Japan from its ailing state with a sum of 10 billion yen. The two go on a search for Takizawa's past and try to solve the riddle of the mysterious game.
action
Saki Morimi ( 森 美 咲 , Morimi Saki ), who has just finished school and is not quite sure what to do with her life, meets Akira Takizawa ( 滝 沢 朗 , Takizawa Akira ) under strange circumstances . He has no memories of his past, but has a mysterious mobile phone. Saki decides to help Takizawa find his past.
Takizawa discovers that he has a fortune of 8.2 billion yen (about 62 million euros) with his cell phone and that he can contact a person named Juiz, who uses the money to ensure that all of Takizawa's wishes are implemented. It turns out that Takizawa is part of a "game" in which 12 chosen ones - the Seleçao - received 10 billion yen each from the mysterious stranger Mr. Outside to rescue Japan from its ailing state. Each of the chosen ones may proceed as it makes the most sense to them. However, some rules apply, one of which is that a chosen one will be liquidated if their account reaches 0 yen without being able to save Japan.
While searching for Takizawa's past, he and Saki encounter some of the other Seleçao and learn about the means by which they are trying to save Japan. They learn that Takizawa himself has erased his memories and the suspicion emerges that he was responsible for the recent bombings in Japan and the disappearance of 20,000 NEETs (young adults who are neither educated nor employed) could. Saki's friends, with whom she developed the Internet portal Eden of the East , are also drawn into the story. They are initially critical of Takizawa, not least because of the jealous Satoshi Ōsugi , who is in love with Saki and fears that he will lose her love to Takizawa.
When Takizawa is invited to a meeting of several Seleçao, he learns that they carried out the bombings to wake up the Japanese people. At the time, Takizawa carried out a major rescue operation via the Internet and sent 20,000 NEETs on a voyage to get them to safety. As a result, rumors arose that Takizawa had killed these people and that he was responsible for the bombings, so that he felt betrayed by those he had saved and his disappointment erased his memories. Since Takizawa's rescue operation thwarted the original aim of the bombings, the other Seleçao are now planning an even larger attack.
Encouraged by the confidence that Saki has in him, Takizawa again decides to thwart the new attacks. With the help of the returned 20,000 NEETs and the Internet portal Eden of the East, he succeeds in destroying the bombs before they reach their destination. Takizawa recognizes that the Japanese people are capable of great achievement, but lack someone to take responsibility and leadership. So he instructs Juiz to make him King of Japan with the remaining money.
Conception
In the series, several real and current issues relating to society as a whole and specific to Japan are taken up: On the one hand, the subject of terrorism , as an attempt to change the social situation through violence, plays a major role. On the other hand, the socially and economically relevant subject of NEETs in Japan is taken up; These are young adults who refuse to take up a job that meets social expectations after completing their training and instead let their parents continue to finance them. The story also addresses the increasing influence of the internet, especially social software .
The cell phones used by the Seleçao also have a real reference: They are based on a design by the NEC Corporation that is specially tailored to motorcyclists. It was adopted in an almost identical design.
Both elements, terrorism and cell phone, are combined in the opening credits. The backgrounds, mostly designed in shades of gray, which show houses and landscapes in ruins, are repeatedly broken up by bright mobile phone lettering.
The end credits, on the other hand, are implemented using a mixture of paper cutting and stacks of paper and sheets of paper animated in stop motion, which are mostly presented in shades of gray. The pencils that cut the paper take on the role of rockets that cut through the air, while the explosion clouds are created from crumpled paper.
