Edgar Hobinka

Edgar Hobinka (born December 16, 1905 in Mährisch Schönberg , † January 24, 1989 in Wetzlar ) was a German music teacher and folklorist .

Live and act

As the son of a railway worker in Šumperk on Altvater born, put Edgar Hobinka 1924, the Graduate and studied at the German University in Prague German and Slavic studies . At the same time Hobinka also studied at the Prague Academy of Music and Performing Arts . In 1931 he became a teacher at the secondary school in Käsmark . He later worked as a high school professor and director of the teachers' academy in Pressburg .

Through resettlement Hobinka came in August 1946 after initially Bürstadt and finally came to Wetzlar, where he held a teaching position at the 15 November 1948 Goetheschule took. Together with Hugo Lotz, he founded the Wetzlar Music School in 1957 , which he directed for 25 years. Under his leadership, the music school moved into the nave of the Franciscan Church on Schillerplatz in 1966 and in 1981 comprised around 1,100 music students and 60 teachers.

Hobinka also belonged to the city ​​council of Wetzlar from 1956 to 1976 , first for the BHE and later for the SPD , and was chairman of the culture committee. As a city councilor, he suggested in 1962 that the city of Wetzlar take over the sponsorship of the East German song . After a unanimous decision, Hobinka took over the construction of the archive, which today contains around 1,700 song books and a song search file with around 63,000 song title entries. It is the largest collection of songs that is structured according to song beginnings.

Edgar Hobinka died at the age of 83. The big funeral service took place in Wetzlar Cathedral .

Honors

Hobinka received, among many other awards, the Letter of Honor from the State of Hesse , the Wenzel Jaksch Medal and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class . He was also made an honorary citizen of the city of Wetzlar in 1984. Since the late 1990s, a street in the Wetzlar district of Büblingshausen has been called Edgar-Hobinka-Straße .
