Edgar Oehler

Edgar Oehler (born March 2, 1942 in Balgach ; legal domicile there ) is a Swiss entrepreneur and politician ( CVP ).

Life

Oehler attended primary school in Balgach from 1949 to 1955, secondary school in Widnau in 1956 , before attending the cantonal school in St. Gallen from 1956 to 1962 and graduating in 1962 with the Matura . After graduating from high school, he earned military service as an infantryman up to a lieutenant.

From 1963 to 1967 he studied political science , specializing in public law, in the consular-diplomatic course at St. Gallen University . He then studied at the University of Zurich and Christian University Tokyo, among others, and received his doctorate in 1975.

While still studying, he ran his own plastering business in Balgach and was a journalist for the daily newspaper Die Ostschweiz and the associated headers, later editor-in-chief .

He stopped these activities in 1985 after joining the Arbonia Forster Group (AFG) , where he was General Manager from 1985 to 1990. On September 11, 2003 he took over the majority of shares in AFG Arbonia-Forster-Holding AG and subsidiaries and was Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Management Board of AFG, based in Arbon , Canton Thurgau , from October 13, 2003 to April 29, 2011 . He remained an ordinary member of the Board of Directors until his retirement in 2014. He was the company's main shareholder until November 2014.

Oehler has four children and lives in Balgach. He is married to the painter Marianne Oehler .

In 2017, the business magazine Bilanz estimated his fortune at CHF 175 million.

politics

Oehler was a member of the National Council from 1971 to 1995 and during this time a member of the parliamentary committee of the CVP parliamentary group in the Federal Assembly . The CVP politician was a member of various parliamentary commissions focusing on economic, financial, foreign and state policy. From 1991 to 2004 he was President of the Association of the Swiss Cigarette Industry and thus a lobbyist for the tobacco industry.
