Edgar von Uechtritz-Steinkirch (born April 5, 1866 at Tzschocha Castle ; † November 28, 1938 in Gebhardsdorf ) was a German explorer and landowner.

origin

Uechtritz came from the Lower Silesian branch of the originally from Meissen originating Uradelsgeschlechts with the same name parent Uichteritz in Weissenfels on the Saale .

Life

Uechtritz initially served in the imperial army and took his leave as a lieutenant in the reserve . In 1889/90 he traveled to Brazil and from 1891 to German South West Africa . In 1893 he led the Foreign Office's expedition to Adamaua, in which Siegfried Passarge also took part. The expedition carried out the survey of the area and thus enabled the subsequent conclusion of several contracts to secure the German protectorate over North Cameroon as part of the German colony .

Uechtritz later owned a farm in German South West Africa and then lived on his property in Gebhardsdorf in Lower Silesia, where he died in 1938.

family

Uechtritz married Viola Lytle in 1895 (* 1874 in Delaware in Ohio in the United States , † August 28, 1912 in Columbus ), the daughter of James Robert Lytle. The couple had met in Berlin, where Viola continued her studies in music , which she had started at Ohio Wesleyan University .
