Edouard Longerstaey

Frederic Theodoor Edouard Longerstaey (born December 14, 1919 in Rupelmonde , East Flanders, † March 28, 1986 in Kruibeke ) was a Belgian diplomat .

Life

Edouard Longerstaey was the son of Berthe Ledent and Achilles Longerstaey. He married Marguerite Thooris their children were Patrick, Philippe and Jacques. Longerstaey joined the foreign service in 1946. He was Vice Consul in New York State from 1947 to 1950 . From 1952 to 1956 he was promoted to second class embassy secretary in The Hague. From 1956 to 1958 he was promoted to first-class embassy secretary in Tehran . From March 1, 1961 to January 30, 1962, he was the Belgian ambassador to Kinshasa in the Republic of the Congo . From 1963 to 1964 he was the Belgian ambassador to Algiers in Algeria. From 1965 to 1967 he was the representative of the Belgian government at the United Nations organizations in Geneva . From 1968 to 1969 he was the Belgian ambassador to Rome in Italy . From 1972 to 1973 he was the permanent representative of the Belgian government at the UN headquarters . He was Secretary General of the Western European Union from March 1, 1977 to May 31, 1985 . He was retired in May 1985 .
