Eduard Gaugler

Eduard Gaugler (born June 23, 1928 in Stuttgart ; † April 12, 2014 in Hirschberg an der Bergstrasse ) was a German economist . Most recently he held the chair for general business administration , human resources and ergonomics at the University of Mannheim .

Life

Eduard Gaugler studied economics and social sciences at the University of Munich from 1949 to 1954 and at what was then the Nuremberg University of Economics and Social Sciences . After completing his degree in business administration , he was awarded a Dr. oec. publ. PhD. The habilitation for business administration followed in 1966 at the University of Munich, where he initially taught as a university lecturer.

From 1967 to 1972 he was a professor of business administration at the University of Regensburg . In 1972 he accepted the position at the University of Mannheim as successor to August Marx and was there until 1996 director of the seminar for general business administration, human resources and ergonomics. From 1973 to 1976 he was the rector of the University of Mannheim , where he also served as the dean of the business administration faculty in 1987/88 .

1981/82 he was chairman of the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration , 1988/89 chairman of the structural advisory board of the Catholic University of Eichstätt for the establishment of a faculty for economics in Ingolstadt and then until 1991 founding dean of this faculty. He was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. rer. Pol.hc) from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Passau (1988), from the Economics Faculty of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (1991) and from the Catholic University of Lublin (2010). From 1991 to 1998 he was director of the Institute for SME Research at the University of Mannheim, which is dedicated to researching the German SME economy.

Act

Eduard Gaugler's main research areas were in the areas of company human resources, company social policy, company organization and company policy.

With his appointment to the oldest German chair for operational human resources at the University of Mannheim, his work had concentrated on numerous aspects of human resource management. Wirtschaftswoche awarded him the title of “Personal Pope” for his research in this area.

The practical relevance of his theoretical knowledge and the applicability of his research results in everyday business life shaped his research.

Eduard Gaugler was involved in business practice not only as a board member, but also on supervisory and administrative boards as well as advisory boards, for example as a long-term member of the board of the AGP working group in Kassel, the AWV working group in Eschborn, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Personalführung eV (DGfP) in Düsseldorf and the Schmalenbach Society eV (SG-DGfB) in Cologne. From 1978 to 1988 he was a member of the supervisory board of Boehringer Mannheim GmbH.

For many years he was deputy chairman of the administrative board of Carl Duisberg Centren GmbH. In addition, Eduard Gaugler advised various economic and scientific organizations, for example in the "Expert Commission for Further Education" of the state government of Baden-Württemberg or in the advisory board of the Institute of German Economy in Cologne. In the German section of the International Industrial Relations Association eV (IIRA) he was deputy chairman of the board. Eduard Gaugler was an advisor to the Federal Ministry of Research and advisor to the Bishops' Conference on charitable and social issues.

With his research contributions, Eduard Gaugler founded the so-called "Mannheim School" of human resources, which has always emphasized and promoted the practical relevance of science. His work in research and teaching in business administration is of national and international importance. His lecturing activities have taken him to Western and Eastern Europe, the USA or Japan and Korea. At the first World Congress of Business Management-Oriented University Professors in 1992 in Tokyo (IFSAM), he headed the section “Human Resource Management and Labor Relations”.

Eduard Gaugler was co-editor of the “Hand Wortbuch des Personalwesens”, the third edition of which appeared in 2004. Since 1977 he has been co-editor of the trade journal Personal .

In addition to the three honorary doctorates, he received further honors for his commitment: He was a bearer of the Bavarian Order of Merit (1991) and the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (October 14, 1999).
