Eduard Khil ( Russian Эдуард Анатольевич Хиль , English transcription Eduard Khil; * 4. September 1934 in Smolensk , Russian SFSR , † 4. June 2012 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian Estrada - singer ( baritone ).

Life

youth

Eduard Anatoljewitsch Chil was born in 1934 in Smolensk, the son of a mechanic and an accountant. His paternal grandfather had led the local church choir during the time of the tsarist rule and was arrested for it by the new communist government. His family broke up in his early childhood, and after his parents separated, he lived with his mother. When Smolensk was bombed during the war, Chil was evacuated and also separated from his mother. First, Chil was brought to the countryside, in Penza Oblast , then he was taken to an orphanage in Ufa . The living conditions in the orphanage were very poor, there was neither enough food, nor were the rooms adequately heated. During this time, Chil took part in theatrical performances for wounded soldiers at the local hospital. After two failed attempts to escape from the orphanage, Chil finally reached his hometown of Smolensk with a friend at the end of 1943, where he went to see his mother. After the end of the war he worked in a factory. In 1949 he went to Leningrad, where he first studied art and at the same time also appeared in the Kirov Opera on Vasilyevsky Island .

Career

In 1960 he successfully completed his five-year vocal studies at the Leningrad Conservatory . During his studies he continued to perform as an opera singer, for example in the role of Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro . After successfully completing his studies, he began his singing career, initially focusing mainly on folk songs and later on pop songs. Chil made his first solo appearance in Moscow in 1962 . There one quickly became aware of his skills, which is why he was invited to the “Second All-Russian Competition of Performing Artists” that same year, which Chil won.

In the 1960s, Chil celebrated its first successes in the Soviet Union . A series of awards and prizes culminated in the award of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1971 and the RSFSR's 1974 People's Artist Award . As one of the few Soviet artists, he was allowed to tour Europe and the United States on a world tour to travel. Most of the visitors had Russian ancestors or were first generation Russians themselves. In total, he has performed in more than 80 countries in the course of his career. In 1973 Chil made a television appearance in Sweden , which was a privilege for a Soviet artist at the time. In the early 1990s, Chile's success waned along with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1994 he went on another tour, where he gave concerts in Russia and abroad. Chil's appearances in Moscow and St. Petersburg met with particularly strong interest.

Internet phenomenon

A 1976 recording of his (originally sung in 1966) vocalized version of the title Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой ( German  I'm very happy because I'm finally coming home ) by Arkadi Ostrowski (1914-1967) (1914-1967) was made by Arkadi Ostrowski (1914-1967) via YouTube to the Internet phenomenon and made Chil internationally known, in German-speaking countries - based on the refrain - as a "trololo man". The lyrics were originally about a cowboy returning to his wife Mary. Due to strict censorship , he was unable to publish this version because it was "too American" for the censors. Therefore he sang the song with simple "Hohohohohos" and "Trololololos". He followed the Russian tradition of vocalise , which is comparable to the tradition of American scat .

In 2010, Chil said:

“Thereby hangs a tale about this song. Lyrics were written for it, but they were poor. I mean, they were good, but one couldn't publish them at that time. […] Of course, we failed to publish it at that time, and we, Arkady Ostrovsky and I, decided to make it a vocalise. But the essence remained in the title. "

“There is a story to this song. A text was written about it, but [this] it was bad. I mean, it was actually good, but you couldn't publish it at the time. […] Of course we didn't manage to publish it, so we, Arkadi Ostrowski and I, decided to make a sound version. The core of the story remained in the title. "

In the first episode of Season 10 of Family Guy in 2011, Chil was portrayed as a singing bartender. Christoph Waltz parodied the song for the TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live! to educate audiences about his beginnings as an actor before his success in the movie Inglourious Basterds . In the 2018 film Pacific Rim: Uprising , Chil is shown briefly singing the trololo song.

Chil felt honored by its late popularity and made some appearances with the song on Russian television. According to his son, however, he also had the feeling that some people would make fun of him and portray him as an idiot.

Chil suffered a stroke in April 2012 and died after being in a coma on June 4, 2012 in Saint Petersburg.
