Eduard Pütz (born February 13, 1911 in Illerich near Cochem , Mosel ; † January 18, 2000 in Bad Münstereifel ) was a German composer and music teacher .

Live and act

Eduard Pütz studied 1930-1935 school music and mathematics at the College of Music and at the University in Cologne . His composition teachers were Heinrich Lemacher , Hermann Schroeder and Kaspar Roeseling. After the war he worked as a publishing arranger and pianist in various jazz ensembles. 1950–1965 he was a teacher at the grammar school in Rheinbach , 1965–1979 lecturer for music theory and composition at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne. In 1997 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his work .

Eduard Pütz's work includes an opera, a requiem, orchestral works, chamber music, choral music and piano music. As a composer, he was concerned with overcoming the boundaries between so-called “serious” and “entertaining” music; his compositions therefore often include stylistic features of jazz and pop music. One of these works is the “Jazz Sonata” for piano (1988), in which a synthesis between contemporary music and jazz is achieved. Contemporary tonality and jazz harmony are not opposites here, classical design and improvisational attitude combine to form a unit. Further works in cross-over style are "Twilight Dream" for violin and piano (1983), "Blues for Benni" for viola and piano (1991), "Cries in the dark" for saxophone and string quartet and the "Blues Fantasy" for 6 cellos. The orchestral piece “Blue Fantasy” was premiered in 1996 by the Landesjugend-Orchester Nordrhein-Westfalen and recorded on CD.

His musical convictions Pütz expressed in an interview in 1997:

“In our century, serious and light music have diverged greatly, which was not the case in the past. Years ago this separation was even stronger, today both seem to come together again for many. I've always stood in between. Many people see the simultaneous engagement with light music and serious music as a violation of artistic purity. You may be right. But Brecht wrote somewhere in his writings about the theater: One of the most important functions of the theater is entertainment. If I suppressed my inclination to lighter or more accessible forms of music, I would not be honest. ""

Pütz also wrote many easy-to-play works for children and young people and responded to requests from practice. Some works are often used in the classroom, including “Mr. Clementi goin 'on holidays ”for piano, the“ Short stories ”for cello and piano or the cycle“ Let's play together ”for piano four hands.
