Eduard Wimmer

Eduard Wimmer (* December 25, 1840 , † May 12, 1902 ) was a Bavarian officer and military and local researcher .

Wimmer, the son of an ophthalmologist, joined the Royal Bavarian Infantry Body Regiment in 1859 . In 1861/62 he attended war school . In 1863 he was transferred to the 8th Infantry Regiment in Passau , and in 1864 as a lieutenant in Ingolstadt . There he dealt with his comrade Hugo Arnold with the Roman Limes and was one of the co-founders of the historical association. After participating in the war in 1870/71, he moved to the 11th Infantry Regiment in Straubing , and in 1877 he was appointed captain and company commander. In Straubing he was interested in local history and also carried out excavations in Roman Straubing, the ancient Sorviodurum . In 1880 he founded the “Historical Collection of the City” in the Straubing City Tower, from which the Gäuboden Museum later emerged. On March 2, 1888, he was made an honorary citizen of Straubing for his research into the city's history and as the founder of the museum. In 1888 he retired as a lieutenant colonel in the military and until 1894 was commander of the Landwehr district of Wasserburg am Inn . In 1897 he became director of the Bavarian Army Museum in Munich .
