Edward Balcerzan

Edward Balcerzan (born October 13, 1937 in Vovchansk , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Polish literary historian , literary theorist , poet , prose writer , literary critic and translator . In his scientific research he is mainly concerned with the Polish poetry of the 20th century.

Life

Balcerzan was born in Vovchansk, where he lived during the Second World War . In the summer of 1946 he moved to Stettin and attended grammar school there. As a schoolboy he published poems. After graduating from high school in 1956, he began studying Polish at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan . During his studies he was a member of the Poznan literary circle Wiatraki from 1957 to 1959 and of the Szczecin group Metafora in 1958 . He also married the later writer Bogusława Latawiec in 1959 . After obtaining his master's degree in 1961 , he returned to Szczecin and initially worked as a librarian at the Technical University of Szczecin . He also worked with the regional editorial team of Polskie Radio and regional magazines. In 1962 he moved back to Poznan, where he was employed as a research assistant at the Adam Mickiewicz University. At the same time he worked from 1963 for the Wydawnictwo Poznańskie . After receiving his doctorate in 1968 with the work Bruno Jasieński po polsku i po rosyjsku. Stylistyczne problemy dwujęzyczności he headed the literary section of the monthly Nurt from 1968 to 1972 , with which he worked until 1981. After his habilitation in 1972 with the work Przez znaki. Granice autonomii sztuki poetyckiej na materiale polskiej poezji współczesnej he became a member of Komitet Nauki o Literaturze Polskiej at the Polish Academy of Sciences and in 1973 lecturer at the Adam Mickiewicz University. In the following years he gave lectures and led seminars in Stockholm and Uppsala (1977, 1979 and 1984) and from 1981 to 1983 in Turku . In 1980 he became a member of Solidarność . In 1985 he became an associate professor and in 1990 a full professor, and in that year he took over the management of the Institute for Literary Theory at Adam Mickiewicz University. From 2009 to 2011 he was a member of the jury for the Nike Literature Prize .

He lives in Poznan.
