Oven affair

After accusations of infidelity and fraud were made against Zimmermann in connection with the so-called "oven affair", he resigned from his ministerial office on November 14, 1997 with effect from December 19, 1997. When EU funding and contracts were awarded, around 250,000 euros went to Zimmermann's family farm for the ABM project of a “show bakery” during his tenure . The local wood-burning stove, which was particularly favored by the funding, was operated by his wife, brother and daughter. In spring 1998, the state of Brandenburg demanded some of the subsidies back.

At the end of 1998 the public prosecutor of the Potsdam Regional Court started investigations against Zimmermann for breach of trust and subsidy fraud. The former minister, whose offices were subsequently raided, firmly denied the allegations. The proceedings were initially discontinued and resumed in summer 2000. On February 22nd, 2002, Zimmermann and two other defendants were acquitted by a chamber of the Potsdam Regional Court. The public prosecutor's office then applied for a revision and the reopening of the proceedings ended in April 2003 with the lifting of the acquittal. On February 18, 2004, Zimmermann was sentenced in a further trial after 15 days of trial by the Potsdam Regional Court to a prison sentence of eleven months on probation and to a payment of 5,000 euros to a charitable organization. On June 16, 2005, the Federal Court of Justice upheld the conviction and rejected Zimmermann's appeal.
