Gustav Just (born June 16, 1921 in Reinowitz , Czechoslovakia , † February 23, 2011 in Prenden ) was a German journalist and politician .

Life

The son of a locksmith joined the Hitler Youth in 1938 . After graduating from high school in 1940, he registered as a war volunteer and took part in the war against the Soviet Union , where he suffered several injuries and was promoted to lieutenant. He married in 1944.

After the end of the Second World War , he completed a course for new teachers and worked as a teacher until 1948. From 1946 to 1957 Just was a member of the SED and held various political functions. In addition, he was deputy editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Sonntag until 1956 , a member of the Writers' Association and its general secretary in 1954/55. On July 26, 1957, as a member of the Harich group, he was sentenced to four years in prison with Walter Janka , Heinz Zöger and Richard Wolf for “forming a conspiratorial anti-state group” . In the same year he was expelled from the SED. He had previously been in custody for six months. After 45 months in Bautzen , including 24 months in solitary confinement, Just started working as a freelance writer and translator of Czech and Slovak literature. His work in this area was honored in 1998 with the Johann Heinrich Voss Prize for Translation . In 1986 Just retired, but continued to work in literature.

In December 1989 he founded the SPD local association Prenden and since 1990 has been the district chairman of the SPD Bernau and a member of the district assembly. On January 5, 1990, the 1957 judgment was overturned. In the state elections in Brandenburg in 1990 , he entered the state parliament for the SPD and became senior president. In 1992 it became known that Just had been involved in the shooting of Jews in the USSR during World War II, whereupon he resigned from his state parliament mandate.
