Life
Egon F. Freiheit initially worked as a researcher, reporter and editor-in-chief for local, regional and tabloid newspapers, including Der Mittag and Bild-Zeitung . In 1972 he moved to Welt am Sonntag as a political and economic correspondent . In 1973 he was initially head of the Munich office of Welt am Sonntag , after which he became head of politics / economics at Bild am Sonntag and a member of the editorial board. In January 1980 he joined Gruner + Jahr as one of the three founding editor-in-chief of the business magazine impulse .
In 1984, at the request of impulse publisher Johannes Gross, Gruner + Jahr / Bertelsmann sent him as programming officer and editor-in-chief to the first German-speaking private TV broadcaster ( RTL plus ) in Luxembourg , where he set up the information area. During this time, the news show started 7 to 7 . At the same time, Freiheit brought presenters such as Peter Kloeppel , Ulrich Meyer and Ulrich “Ulli” Potofski to RTL. At the beginning of 1987 he went back to Germany and succeeded Gert Braun as editor-in-chief of Illustrierte Quick in Munich. The freedom brought as "emergency helper" and "savior" could not meet all expectations. He increased the market share, but the circulation continued to decrease during his time as editor-in-chief. In 1988 he left the paper. Sales per issue were 815,800 when he took office and 768,200 when he left.
In 1989, Freiheit went independent . He wrote the screenplay for the RTL melodrama Mother, I don't want to die ; The film version achieved a record high of around 8.27 million viewers with a 28.7 percent market share.
On June 26, 2010 he married the actress Maren Gilzer , with whom he had been living for 17 years at that time. In July 2013, the couple announced their separation.
