life and work

Hofmann came from a wealthy industrial family and came into contact with art at an early age, on the one hand through his mother, a painter, and on the other hand through his grandfather, an art collector and patron.

Hofmann graduated from the Humanistic Gymnasium in Linz in 1903 and then began studying law, studying in Munich , Vienna and Innsbruck . In 1903 he became a member of the Corps Makaria in Munich . During his studies there were stays in Paris , where he attended the Louvre and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . After studying law, which he completed with a doctorate to become a Dr. iur. graduated, he was trained as a painter at the academies in Stuttgart and Dresden , which was interrupted by being drafted into the First World War.

After the war, the artists' association Der Ring von Hofmann was co-founded in 1918 . This led to the acquaintance of Matthias May and Margarete Pausinger . From 1919 to 1921 he stayed again in Dresden, where Expressionism had established itself in the meantime .

In 1922 he re-founded the artists' association MAERZ in Linz, which quickly held an excellent position in the Upper Austrian art world. After the MAERZ was banned in 1939, the third re-establishment took place in 1952 under Hofmann.

During his life, Hofmann made frequent trips across Europe and climbed many mountains for the first time. Due to the early death of his younger brother Adolf in 1934, he was given the management of his father's company .

In the later years of his life there was a more intensive occupation with painting . In addition to oil paintings, the artist created pastel drawings and graphics (drypoint etchings and woodcuts). His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. Many of his works are now in the Royal Cabinet of Prints and Drawings in Dresden, the Albertina in Vienna, the Upper Austrian State Museum, the Neue Galerie in Linz and the Galerie Lehner in Vienna.

Egon Hofmann died in 1972 as a result of an accident with a tram.

Hofmann's work was recognized in 2020 with a comprehensive solo exhibition in the Nordico City Museum in Linz .

style

Egon Hofmann is a classic modern artist who also translates his passion for mountaineering into his pictures. Often the themes of his work are mountains and natural landscapes. His paintings are spontaneous impressions of nature and not strict or detailed compositions. Hofmann always put them together from a natural and subtle color palette.
