Eido I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eido I. , also Ido , Eid or Agidius (* 955 ; † December 20, 1015 in Leipzig ) was Bishop of Meissen from 992 to 1015 .

Probably of noble origin from the Colditz family , Eido was a member of the Magdeburg cathedral chapter ; his appointment as Bishop of Meissen in 992 came on the recommendation of the Archbishop of Magdeburg , Giselher . During his term of office, the dispute over the restoration of the diocese of Merseburg , which was abolished at Giselher's instigation in 981 and whose areas east of the Mulde had fallen to Meissen, fell. Eido managed to keep these areas near Meissen after the reestablishment of the Merseburg diocese in 1004. An activity beyond the borders of the diocese, even at the court of Otto III. is not known.

Thietmar , who was appointed bishop of Merseburg in 1004, reported in the seventh book of his chronicle that Eido died on December 20, 1015 in Leipzig Castle ( in urbe Libzi ) while he was passing through . This location is the first mention of what would later become Leipzig . His body was transferred to Meissen by Hildeward , Bishop of Zeitz , and buried there.
