Karl-Hermann Kandler

Karl-Hermann Kandler (born August 19, 1937 in Dresden ) is a German Protestant theologian, historian and author. He was professor for systematic theology at the University of Leipzig .

Live and act

Kandler studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig and was then parish priest in Saxony from 1962 ; from 1965 to 1980 in Schlettau , then until 1990 in Freiberg . Since then he has been severely disabled due to a total larynx operation. In 1966 he received his doctorate with his dissertation on The Doctrine of the Last Supper of Cardinal Humbert and its significance for the present talk about the Last Supper at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig. In 1970 his habilitation followed there with his work on Christ's body and blood. Studies on current Lutheran doctrine of the sacrament . From 1988 he held teaching positions in Berlin , Leipzig and Freiberg. From 1996 to 2002 he taught as an adjunct professor for systematic theology at the University of Leipzig . Until he retired in 2000, he was managing director of the regional church examination office in Leipzig. From 1997 to 2014 he was chairman of the Lutheran Unification Work of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD) . Since 2014 he has been vice chairman of the association and vice chairman of the executive committee. Between 1978 and 1983 Kandler was a member of the Saxon regional synod . From 1990 until the unification with the EKD in the following year he was a member of the Synod of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR , headed its legal committee and was involved in the unification negotiations. He is involved in the church council in Freiberg and leads the self-help group of the local association of the larynx in Freiberg and the surrounding area.

In his books he deals with the medieval philosopher and natural scientist Dietrich von Freiberg , who taught in the former Dominican monastery, as well as with the thinker Nikolaus von Kues .

Kandler has been married to his wife Christel since 1962. The couple have five daughters. He is a grandson of the architect Woldemar Kandler .
