Eike-Meinrad Winkler's area of activity encompassed the entire spectrum of anthropology. He carried out numerous osteological and paleopathological examinations on historical skeletal finds in Austria, including those of the medieval Austrian ruling family of the Babenbergs . On behalf of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, he led the anthropological studies of the excavations at Tell el Dab'a in Lower Egypt for over ten years .

Winkler was one of the last anthropologists who still carried out anthropological field research on expeditions. He conducted extensive morphological and anthropological studies in Kenya and Namibia by, among other things, the Bushmen of !Kung . In these studies, in which his colleague Kerrin Christiansen also participated, physiological and psychological characteristics were also taken into account. In several papers, Winkler dealt with the typological structure of the indigenous population in East and South Africa, which he evaluated using statistical methods. He also advocated morphological and typological research approaches in a number of theoretical papers.

In addition to his specialist publications, Winkler also published two volumes of poetry: "Kaudawöösch" (Atelier Edition 1991) in Viennese dialect and "With the flashlight into the beyond" (Cantos Verlag 1992) with numerous self-composed illustrations.
