action
Regina Hallwanger is married to the farmer Martin. She loves children more than anything, but cannot get pregnant as a result of an accident. But since she is worried about who might one day inherit the farm, one day she goes to visit her relatives, as Martin has no relatives himself. Here she hopes to find a suitable heir. Farmer Erlhofer, who once wooed her in vain, meanwhile puts the flea in her ear that her husband could cheat in order to get from another woman what his own could not give him. In fact, Regina believes this bad rumor, especially since she comes up with a suitable candidate for cheating in the maid Gertraud.
When one day the traveling pan-maker and basket weaver Haunstetter turns up in the area, he has another one with him, in addition to his own three children. It's about the little boy Anderl, the result of a mistake by Martin, but Regina knows nothing about him. Anderl was conceived when Regina had to recover many years ago as a result of her accident and Martin had a brief affair with a temporary maid during the annual hay harvest. The same has died in the meantime, and the old haunstetter has since done everything to take care of the boy, whom Martin left to two old women and for whose care he always paid maintenance. Haunstetter came with the intention of extorting hush money from Martin Hallwanger with the former misstep. So far, the farmer has not dared to tell his wife about Anderl, although accepting the boy would have eliminated all problems of Regina's continued childlessness. But would she forgive him, Martin?
One day there is a serious accident. Irritated by the Erlhofer farmer, Regina thrashes especially on a carriage horse, so that it goes through and tramples Anderl down. Martin and the maid Gertraud rush to the nearest hospital with the injured boy. There the convalescent boy is visited by Regina. She quickly takes a liking to the child, and it is not just because of her bad conscience that she asks Martin whether they might not be able to adopt the little Anderl. Martin is of course enthusiastic about this suggestion, but still does not dare to tell Regina the whole truth. Things start to move when Regina, who still believes her husband is having an affair with Gertraud, expels the maid from court. When she leaves, she is so decent and keeps her knowledge of Martin's blood relationship with Anderl to herself. Now it is finally up to Farmer Hallwanger to tell his wife the whole truth. Regina is then no longer ready to adopt Anderl. Disappointed and bitter, Martin then wants to leave the farm to look for work in the city so that he can continue to take care of Anderl.
The old haunstetter, who was promised 1000 Marks by Regina for the surrender of Anderl, now finally wants his money, but under these circumstances the farmer's wife is no longer willing. As a result, the pan-tinker set a fire on the farm shortly after Martin Hallwanger left the property. There is a duel between the Erlhofer farmer and Haunstetter, who rushes to the front, in which the latter is defeated. Martin, who had seen the blazing flames from afar, hurries back and extinguishes the fire with his servants. These dramatic events weld the Hallwangers together again, and now Regina is ready to finally adopt Martin Anderl. This puts an end to their childlessness and the farm finally has an heir.
