action

The film tells the story of the orphan boy Bobby and begins in the late 1960s. Bobby and his brother Carlton experience the flower power time with drugs and parties. At one of these parties, however, an accident occurs, as a result of which Carlton dies.

After a leap in time, the viewer finds himself back in Bobby's high school days. He's not exactly a pretty boy, so it's not surprising that he becomes friends with another underdog at school, Jonathan. The boys become best friends and when Bobby's parents die, Bobby finds a replacement family with Jonathan and his parents. Bobby develops a special relationship with surrogate mother Alice (Sissy Spacek) in particular. But he also has a close friendship with Jonathan, which is also accompanied by adolescent games under the covers. But when their affection for one another is discovered by Jonathan's mother, when she catches them kissing, things suddenly change. Jonathan moves to New York, while Bobby stays with Jonathan's family.

After another leap in time, the action is in the early eighties, in the middle of the East Village of New York . Bobby (Colin Farrell), meanwhile grown up, meets Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) again and moves in with him and his girlfriend and roommate Clare (Robin Wright Penn). He begins a three-way relationship with Clare and Jonathan. This emotional chaos is too much for Jonathan and so he literally fled to his parents. When Jonathan's father dies, Bobby and Clare travel to see him to help. However, there is also a very emotional discussion between all those involved. The icing on the cake is Clare's admission that she is expecting a child. The three of them want to make the best of their situation and so they give up their apartment in New York to move into a house in the country.

Bobby opens a café to support the small blended family . Bobby and Clare have a daughter and so they all live together for a while. During this time, Clare observes the two men she loves to find out that the feelings between Bobby and Jonathan are still very strong. She therefore decides that she no longer wants to stand between the two men and leaves with her young daughter. Bobby and Jonathan are very concerned about it, but on the other hand they are now finding their way to each other.
