Population development of Kassel
This article shows the development of the population of Kassel in a table and graph. The urban area has not changed since 1936, so that the numbers have been based on the same area since then.
On December 31, 2010, the official population of Kassel was 195,530 according to the Hessian State Statistical Office (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices ). In December 2015, according to the city, the 200,000 mark was exceeded again.
Population development
Kassel already had 17,311 inhabitants in 1773. With the onset of industrialization in the 19th century, population growth accelerated. While around 23,000 people lived in the city in 1810, by 1875 there were already more than 50,000. In 1899, the city's population exceeded 100,000, making it a major city .
Until 1936 the city grew mainly because of the numerous incorporations (the number of inhabitants in brackets): on April 1, 1899 Wehlheiden (10,114), on April 1, 1906 Bettenhausen, Kirchditmold, Rothenditmold and Wahlershausen (18,727), on January 4, 1926 manor district Fasanenhof (419), on November 15, 1928 Gutsbezirke Kragenhof , Wilhelmshöhe, Oberförsterei Ehlen and Oberförsterei Kirchditmold (331) and on June 1, 1936 Harleshausen, Niederzwehren, Nordshausen, Oberzwehren, Waldau and Wolfsanger (22,160). With the incorporation of 1936, the population exceeded the limit of 200,000 for the first time.
In October 1943 the population reached its historic high of 225,694. In the course of the Second World War , several air raids destroyed large parts of the urban development and claimed many lives. The city experienced the heaviest bombardment on October 22, 1943. That night over 10,000 people died and 80 percent of the houses were destroyed. The population fell by 68.4 percent to 71,209 by May 1945.
After the end of the war, the population of the city rose to over 200,000 by 1959 due to the return of the forced evacuees and the influx of numerous refugees and displaced persons from the former German eastern regions . The increase is offset by the designation of new development areas by neighboring communities, which lead to a shift in favor of the suburbs. From 1977 to 1992 and since 1997 the population has been just below the 200,000 limit. In 2007 the city with 193,803 inhabitants was 40th among the major German cities and third within Hesse.
The following table shows the population figures from Kassel to the respective territorial status. Up to 1832 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1834, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.
