El Awadalla

Elfriede "El" Awadalla (born March 31, 1956 in Nickelsdorf ) is an Austrian writer , best known for her dialect literature .

Life

El Awadalla was married to an Egyptian and has been surnamed Awadalla ever since.

Awadalla moved to Vienna in 1975 after completing compulsory school and subsequent commercial apprenticeship , where she has lived since then. She has two children (born in 1980 and 1992), has been a foster daughter since 1995 and has worked in several professions. In 1981 she began studying African Studies , Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies at the University of Vienna and the University of Bir Zait in the Palestinian Territories , which she later dropped out shortly before completing her dissertation.

In 1983 she passed her vocational matriculation examination and worked from 1994 to 2014 as an accountant and payroll clerk at the Wiener Literaturhaus . Until 2011 she was the works council chairman of the documentation center for modern Austrian literature in the Literaturhaus Wien. From 2001 to 2003 she was a cultural organizer at the Siebenstern cultural center .

In 2005 she appeared as a candidate at the millionaire show with Armin Assinger and was able to successfully answer all questions and thus win one million euros. On May 28, 2014 she failed on the program Der Quiz-Champion on ZDF only because of the last question to move into the final, where she could have won 250,000 euros .

In the state and municipal council elections in Vienna in 2015 , she ran for Vienna differently . She tried to run as a left-wing candidate in the federal presidential election in Austria in 2016 , but one day before the end of the submission deadline for declarations of support, she had only received around 5500 signatures instead of the required 6000, which is why she was not running her candidacy. Three weeks are too short for candidates without a machine and large donations to collect 6,000 certified signatures. The time for an independent left-wing candidacy is not yet ripe either. As for the budget, a donation account has been set up. "There's nothing left of the legendary million," said the millionaire show winner from 2005.

Literary resume

From 1979 to 1987 she was a board member of the working group for women writing . The association no longer exists. Since 1982 she has published in newspapers, magazines, anthologies and radio. In 1992 she joined Ö.DA (Austrian dialect authors and archives) and has been chairwoman and editor of the magazine Morgenschtean since 2001 .

Awadalla is co-author of several non-fiction books on the topics of sects , esotericism and right-wing extremism as well as co-founder and jury member of the Lise Meitner Literature Prize , which is awarded by the women's department of the TU Wien .

Since 1995 she has been self-publishing dialect poems on beer mats . In the course of her work at Ö.DA she organized many events (also together with the art association akunst ) and was involved in a total of 364 so-called resistance readings together with Traude Korosa from 2000 to 2007 .

She holds readings and lectures and takes an active part in poetry slams in Austria and neighboring countries.
