El Kseur (in Kabyle : Leqser in Tifinagh : ⵍⴻⵇⵙⴻⵔ, in Arabic :القصر, DMG al-Qaṣr ) is a municipality in Algeria and the capital of a district of the province of Béjaïa in Kabylia . It is located 24 km southwest of Bejaia , 100 km east of Tizi Ouzou and 116 km northeast of Bouira .

Location and climate

The area of ​​the municipality of El Kseur is located 20 km southwest of the city of Bejaia in the Soummam valley, halfway between the Hoch- and Niederkabylei.

The relief of El Kseur is mountainous. The city lies in a narrow valley at the foot of the Ibariss, east of the Djurdjura Mountains. The wadi separates downtown Berchiche, one of the oldest parts of the city.

Hydrography

The city of El Kseur is supplied with water from the Tichy-haf dam in Bouhamza. The dam is fed by rain and meltwater from the Djurdjura snowpack. It has a storage capacity of 150 million m 3 and supplies the Wilaya of Béjaia with an amount of 20,000 m³ / day.

The city of El Kseur enjoys a temperate and humid climate with mild winters and significant rainfall. Because of the mountain massifs that surround the city, it snows every year in winter between December and February at altitudes of more than 600 m.

The city is crossed by the railway line that connects Bejaia with Algiers and serves the El Kseur-Oued Amizour train station.

The municipality's road transport network essentially consists of two national roads: National Road 12, which connects the two regional cities of Béjaïa and Tizi Ouzou, and National Road 26, which connects Bejaia to Algiers via M'Chedallah .

Antiquity

In the area of ​​El Kseur, 3 km from Tiklat, are the Roman ruins of the ancient Tubusuctu (or Tubusuptu ). This Roman colony was intended for veterans of the VII Legion of Augustus . French colonial times

During the colonization, El Kseur was a center of European settlement from 1872. Many Alsace and Lorraine settled there, especially after the French defeat of 1870 against Prussia . During the Algerian War, El Kseur was one of the first regions in Kabylia in which a group of the FLN was formed. El Kseur was the scene of several battles against the guerrillas .
