Elaine is a city in Phillips County , Arkansas , United States with 556 inhabitants (according to the 2015 census). She became known through the Elaine Massacre of 1919. 237 black people were probably killed by white mobs as a result of race riots . This massacre was one of the worst racial riots in US history.

Geographical location
Elaine is about 4 km west of the state of Mississippi . The Yellow Bank Bayou runs east of the settlement and the tributaries of the Gouvan Slough run south . The landscape is flat to hilly. In the past, cotton was mainly grown. There are now some areas where rice is grown.
According to the United States Census Bureau , Elaine covers an area of approximately half a square mile (1.3 km 2 ).

history
In 1919 two whites tried to end a gathering of black sharecroppers (tenants) who wanted to set up a farmers' association to get better terms and pay from the white landowners of the cotton plantations. When a white man was killed, hundreds of whites poured into the area and attacked the African Americans . The Governor Charles Hillman Brough asked for federal troops to the Elaine Race Riot finish. White mobs roamed the county. At least 237 blacks and five whites were killed during the riot. The troops were dispatched by President Woodrow Wilson .
At 6:15 pm on April 26, 2011, a tornado struck the Elaine area. With a wind speed of 75 miles per hour (121 km / h; 65 kn ), the tornado belonged to class EF0 . On its Path of Destruction, the tornado traveled approximately 21.5 miles (34.6 km) along US Highway 61 . The tornado crossed the state line with Mississippi and dissolved near Lula ( Coahoma County ). The tornado's path of destruction was about 200 yards (180 m) wide. Most of the damage occurred in Friars Point and Coahoma, Mississippi.
Population development
Elaine had its heyday in the 1970s when there were 1,210 residents. Since then the population has been decreasing steadily.

The Marvell – Elaine School District offers Marvell Primary School and Marvell High School in Marvell .
