description

Herbarium specimen of Elatostema pleiophlebium

Vegetative characteristics

Elatostema pleiophlebium grows as a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 50 centimeters. The upright and unbranched stem is bare.

The opposite leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The short petiole is 0.3 to 1.7 inches long. The simple, paper-like and bare leaf blade is 10 to 20 centimeters long and 4.5 to 7.2 centimeters wide and is unequal-sided ovate to broad-elongated to elliptical. The base of the spreader tapers on unequal sides, the tip of the spreader is long or short, pointed to blunt and the edge of the spreader is serrated. The upper side of the leaf shows a broad and interrupted white stripe along the central vein and is densely covered with conspicuous 0.25 to 0.8 millimeter long, rod-shaped cystolites . From the central leaf vein , four to ten side veins lead off on the narrower side of the spade and five to eleven side veins on the wider side of the spade. The standing on the base of the leaves stipules are formed with a length from 0.5 to 1.4 centimeters and a width 0.15 to 0.3 centimeters approximately lanceolate to lanceolate. The upper end of the stipules is sharply tapered. They are also covered with 0.5 to 0.7 millimeter long cystolites.

Generative characteristics

The male flower heads stand individually in the leaf axils on an inflorescence stalk about 1.5 millimeters long. The broad, elongated flower base is around 8 millimeters long and around 6 millimeters wide. The six double-row bracts are egg-shaped to almost egg-shaped and are furrowed lengthways on the underside. With a length of 4 to 5 millimeters and a width of about 9 millimeters, the two outer bracts are larger than the four inner bracts, which are between 4 and 5 millimeters long and 5 to 7 millimeters wide. The numerous membrane-like and somewhat translucent bracts are inverted trapezoidal or boat-shaped with a length of 2 to 3.2 millimeters and a width of 0.6 to 2 millimeters. The somewhat longitudinally folded upper side of the bracts is brownish in color and its tip is cap-shaped. The broad obovate and bald male flower buds are about 2 millimeters long, are almost sessile and have a four-horned tip. So far nothing is known about the female flowers and the achenes .

Distribution and occurrence

The natural range of Elatostema pleiophlebium is in southern China. As far as is known, there is an occurrence of several hundred plants not far from the Sanchahe River near Nanxi Municipality in Hekou Autonomous County of Yao in Yunnan Province .

Elatostema pleiophlebium grows in the undergrowth of forests on wet soils . Elatostema alnifolium and various types of figs ( Ficus ), bananas ( Musa ) and pepper plants are associated species .

Taxonomy

It was first described as Elatostema pleiophlebium in 2011 by Wen-Tsai Wang and Zeng-Yuan Wu in PhytoKeys , number 7, page 58. The specific epithet pleiophlebium refers to the numerous lateral leaf nerves of this species.

According to the first description, Elatostema pleiophlebium belongs within the genus Elatostema of the section Elatostema and the series Nanchuanensia . The species resembles Elatostema quinquecostatum with its leaf veins and the number of bracts .
